Unreliable Sensor Grids: Coverage, Connectivity and Diameter

چکیده
We consider an unreliable wireless sensor gridnetwork with n nodes placed in a square of unit area. We are interested in the coverage of the region and the connectivity of the network. We first show that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the random grid network to cover the unit square region as well as ensure that the active nodes are connected are of the form p(n)r(n) ∼ log(n) n , where r(n) is the transmission radius of each node and p(n) is the probability that a node is “active” (not failed). This result indicates that, when n is large, even if each node is highly unreliable and the transmission power is small, we can still maintain connectivity with coverage. We also show that the diameter of the random grid (i.e., the maximum number of hops required to travel from any active node to another) is of the order √ n/ log(n). Finally, we derive a sufficient condition for connectivity of the active nodes (without necessarily having coverage). If the node success probability p(n) is small enough, we show that connectivity does not imply coverage. methods keywords: Stochastic processes/Queueing theory

Wireless sensor networks are often located in areas where access to them is difficult or dangerous. Today, in wireless sensor networks, cluster-based routing protocols by dividing sensor nodes into distinct clusters and selecting local head-clusters to combine and send information of each cluster to the base station and balanced energy consumption by network nodes, get the best performance ...

متن کاملCorrection to “Unreliable Sensor Grids: Coverage, Connectivity and Diameter”
As pointed by S. Kumar et. al. in [1], the necessary conditions described in (2) and (3) in [2] are incorrect. A correct necessary condition was in fact given by us in (7) in the proof of Proposition 2.1 in [2]. In this note, we discuss the implications of this necessary condition on the rest of the results in [2]. First, we restate Proposition 2.1 of [2] with the appropriate corrections. Propo...

Mobile sensor networks rely heavily on inter-sensor connectivity for collection of data. Nodes in these networks monitor different regions of an area of interest and collectively present a global overview of some monitored activities or phenomena. A failure of a sensor leads to loss of connectivity and may cause partitioning of the network into disjoint segments. A number of approaches have be...
